Ask Dr. Toy - March 2009
- 1930's possible Marx / Wyandotte airplane carousel
- I am looking for a picture or maker for a recently purchased toy depicting a carnival airplane carousel. The item is about 6- 6?" tall with a 4-leg gantry in pressed folded tin. The base has a"flower garden" motif lithographed to it, the top is about 2" in diameter and there are 3 monoplanes suspended from the top with abt 22 guage wires. the base has a thumb lever that user moves to the right and then release the top turns and the aircraft rise while spinning clockwise. There is a reproduction item on e-bay but no original maker in the selling descriptor. Was this a Wyandotte or a Marx piece? Primary colors are yellow, red, and green. Thank you for taking time to read this letter. Respectfully Keith.

- 1970s interlocking clear plastic tiles
- I am searching for a building toy that my mom got at the smithsonian institute in the early 70s. They were square (about 3") translucent plastic (I think acrylic) tiles in beautiful jewel colors. They looked like glass. If you stacked 2 tiles on top of each other that were different colors and held them up to a light, they would blend together, for example, a red tile stacked on a yellow tile would look orange, a blue tile and a yellow tile would look green. They had a notch cut into the middle of each of the four sides that went almost all the way, but not quite to the center of the square, and you could interlock the tiles on these notches, to create interesting geometric shapes like stars, snowflakes, boxes, etc., I have no idea what this was called (she kept them in a shoebox). I would LOVE to find this for my daughter.

- 1980sish Metal bodied 4x4 toy truck with gear shifters
- I had this truck in the early 90s, but i think it was a late 80s toy, it was motorized, had a winch on the front and 2 shifters, 1 black, 1 red, with rubber boots on them like a real shifter. One was used for forward and reverse, the other was hi and lo gear. It was silver with a red stripe down the side of it, the winch was also red, had a black grille, black windows, and a black rollbar. It had a cartoonish drawing of the truck drawn on the sides of toys bed, and on the hood. It did have a thin metal body like a ertl, nylint or tonka. I think it might be a P T O toy truck, but I don't have much info on those toys. I would like to know where I could get another one of these trucks. Thanks Erik

- Board game
- Around 1960 I had a a game in a small thin box, about the size of a shoe box but much thinner. It was a boat race game. The plastic boats were on little tracks in the bottom of the box. You would spin the wheel to see how far your boat moved. One boat was named White Cap. I can't find anything about it's existence anywhere. Do you know what it is? My sister had a similar game that was horse racing. I believe there was a car racing game too. The game sticks in my mind because it was given to me in a year when money was very tight and it was the only toy I recieved and I loved it. I would love to find it again. Thanks.

- BOARD GAME
- Looking for an older game from the 50's to 60's. old board games you had to collect 3 food, 3 water & 3 passengers before getting on life boat. The game board was a big ship and each player on his turn rotated the game board which would sink the big ship, but as the game board rotated and you approached the end of the game the sea appreared which you had to get on a life boat and the game continued and you were out in the sea looking for an island to land on to win

- Board game with rotors or gears?
- In about 1971 in junior high geometry, I played a board game where with, I believe, 16 rotors on it. The rotors were in overlapping circles, and each rotor had four concavities, so that the rotors could turn. The empty intersection between the rotors allowed either rotor to move lozenge shaped pieces. The object was a little like chinese checkers. You needed to get all of your lozenges to the other side of the board by turning the rotors. I can't find it on the web and can't remember the name. I haven't seen it since 1971, anywhere.

- Ceramic kitten 1950's/60's carnival prize
- I am trying to replace a ceramic cat that my mother got from a carnival or fair in/around Ohio probably in the late 1950's/early 60's. It is a little grey kitten with a pink bow and sparkly blue eyes. It doesn't have any sort of brand stamp on it anywhere, and I have been searching ebay and antique sites, and have not found the same thing. It looks a lot like the roselane sparkler items but i don't think those were ever found at carnivals, and I have not been able to find this particular one anywhere. Any advice or leads would be much appreciated!

- crawling doll
- I am desperately searching for the name and a pic of a much-beloved, childhood doll. I received the doll as a gift, in the mid-late 70's. The doll was made of hard plastic, caucasian with blonde hair, had a place for a battery in the doll's back and had bendable joints... so that the doll could crawl. I keep thinking it was made by one of the more popular toy makers of that time (Mattel, Hasbro, etc.), but cannot seem to find any such info. I would be very happy, and appreciative, if you're able to locate any information on this doll! Thank you for your time.

- Stuffed blonde "rag doll". Forget what company offered her. 18 inches tall. Blonde braided yarn hair tied with red ribbons. Wearing red checkered gingnam dress & knicker panties. White pinafore apron with red heart outline. Doll body is white cloth with a "drawn on" face. Red cloth "ballet-like slipper shoes" that have red ribbon laces up legs. Probably from the 80's. This doll was a promotional item from some company and I would like to know her name and what company.

- doll collection - soft head and body with black dot eyes and yarn hair
- I'm trying to find a small doll collection from around 1980. These were fairly small-size, collector-type dolls. Doll had a soft cloth body and cloth head. The head was fairly large and was made of a soft white cloth. Small feet. I believe the hair was a thin yarn, straight. The dolls came in various outfits depicting a Victorian-era style. Some of the dolls came with fancy hats. The unique thing about these dolls is that they just had two very small black dots for eyes. No smiling mouth (I don't even think they had a mouth or nose), I just remember the 2 black dot eyes. I thought they may have come from Hallmark, but have scoured the Web and cannot find. I received some of these dolls as a child and would love to find for my daughter. Thank you!

- DOLL IN BUNNY SUITE
- I purchased a doll today at a thrift store and want to identify it. It has a tag on it saying it is collectable and I thought it was an anne geddes but cannot find a tag anywhere saying this. It has porcelain head and hands. Removable bunny ears head covering. All the rest is covered in a furry bunny suit and filled with polyfill and beans, I think. She has a pink heart shaped pillow sewn to her body and attatched to her right wrist with stretchy string. The bunny suit has a big organza bow at the neck where it opens and she appears to be removable from this suit but I am afraid to do so. She also has numbers on the back of her head -9515-4 5/0 or 6 ? which I assume identifies the number made and how many times she was made. Any help you can give me in identifying her would be appreciated.

- Gorilla Hand Puppet with soft shaded vinyl face, pacifier, and short white tail
- I am working for a thrift store bargain center and attempting to price a toy puppet that we received. He doesn't compare with anything that I have seen on e-bay (much more realistic). He has glass hazel eyes with black pupils, a soft plastic face with dark shading around his eyes (almost makes his face look dirty), and his mouth is partially open. He has velcro on his right hand so that you can attach it so it looks like he is holding his right ear and has a pacifier in his left hand. Because of the velcro, I didn't think he is real old, but at the same time I don't want to price him too low and short the bargain center which helps the homeless. I don't believe that he is a Dakin, but his tag has been removed.

- In the Mid to Late 1990s I purchased several TootsieToy "Strip Cap" guns. Most were based on real weapons; "M9, Tec9, Automag" while others were fantasy "FX2000 Robo Phasor". They came on a piece of white tagboard, and were usually aquamarine, with orange accents and purple grips. They used "13 shot strip caps" which were similar to 6 and 8 shot revolver ring caps, but lined up on a zig-zag piece of red plastic that was fed into the gun.

- Stuffed Animal - 1984 LA Summer Games Monkey
- I found a stuffed animal that looks like it could be a collectors item. It is a monkey that is about 16 in. in length. It wears a blue sweatsuit with USA printed on the front and he wears an attached necklace with a silver medal that reads Los Angeles 1984 Summer Games. I have researched every website and cannot find any info. Hope you can help me determine what this could be worth. Thank you.

- Stuffed Animal - Snoring Bunny
- I remember my sister buying me a stuffed bunny from a store in the mall. I believe it was Kirklands, if not, a place just like it. This was not very long ago. 1997-1998. It was a light brown bunny with a cream colored belly and face, about two feet long, and he snored when you turned it on. I'm not sure wether or not his name said George on the tag but that is what I named him and I'm thinking because it was his name. I lost him on a trip to Canada and I remember being absolutely devastated! I am expecting a baby in September and really want them to have the same bunny.

- teddy bear - Dakin, Inc. 1989
- I was wondering if you know how to contact Dakin Inc. I've had a teddy bear from them since I was born and I love it so much. I haven't been able to find any other like him. I'm 17 years old and I have been looking for a way to thank the company, because this bear has brought me so much joy. He is white with a pink ribbon around his neck and a pink heart on his stomach that my parents say glowed in the dark. The year on his tag says 1989. He looks very old now but that's only because I brought him every where. Where ever I went, he went too. Like I said, he has brought me so much joy and I want to thank the company.

- Toys - Identify
- I remember two kind of toys my brothers and I played with. I have been trying to find them again but I have no memory of the name or the company that made them. They were from the mid to late 1980's. One kind of toy was a model set were you put it together and it makes a robotic dinosaur and a little man taught would be a HO scale man. The toy was a wind up toy. The men you could put in the moth of the dinosaur like he was controlling it. The men were kind of gold or silver color. They had a ll different sets a small Duplicitous I remember. My brother had a large one and it was a Pterodactyl. The other toy was mine I got it when I was 5 or 6 so it was around 87 or 88. It was a big T-Rex skeleton it came with a caveman you could put him in the mouth. He had a small dinosaur skull that you could put on his head. Thats all I remember about him. I remember I tried to move his leg and it broke and I was so up set. If you can tell me the names of these toys and show me a link about them I would be so happy. This has been bothering me for years trying to remember the names of them because they were so cool.

- Train set that did a loop...
- There used to be a train set out in the late 80's early 90's, that did a loop. I remember it looking like some type of monorail, and also glew in the dark. This train set was more set up like a toy race track using a trigger to control the speed. I also remember it came in a big flat box, and was some kind of space train. If you could find this for me it would be of great help. I know it was sold in most major department stores around that time.

- VINTAGE JAWS PLUSH TOY SHARK, CIRCA 1975
- In 1975, I was given for Christmas a large stuffed (plush) toy shark inspired by the movie Jaws. It actually stood up straight and was free-standing. It was approx. 3-3.5 feet high. It had big, black shiny eyes made of plastic, and the mouth was open, all red in color, and highlighted by an upper and lower set of bright, white teeth made of a durable, cloth-like material.Do you know this toy and where I might find one again? My original was stolen about three years ago. Best toy I ever had, and I'm a Jaws fan. Would love to give one to my son, who is three. Thanks, Bruce

- vintage rattle
- I am fairly certain this was from the late 60's early 70's. My cousin had what I would call today a rainfall rattle. It had green casing, but clear levels that had different size holes in them to separate different size / color balls. Do you have any idea of who made this or have a picture? I used to love shaking it and watching all of the beads separate and end up on the right levels. I would love to get one for my kids.Well, thanks! Andrea.

- Walt Disney Thumper
- I found an old Walt Disney Thumper stuffed animal. It is red and white plush, with a semi-hard face, and the tag says "Thumper Walt Disney Prod. Gund Mfg Co." I can tell by looking at him that he is an old stuffed animal, but i can't find anything like him on the web. I would guess that he is pre-1950's, but can't be sure. He doesn't look anything like the thumper from the current Bambi movie, but he is very cute nonetheless. Can you give me any information about him, or tell me a place i can go to look. thanks in advance...

- Yawning bean bag type doll
- Late 70's early 80's I had a doll whose body was kinda made out of a beanbag and they came in pink or blue outfits that was like a one piece sleeper. The baby has it's eyes closed and it is yawning. It had a hard plastic head and a little molded curl and plastic hands. Everything else was teh "bean bag". My mom bought it at one of those home parties they used to have. It was my favorite doll and I would love to find one for my niece. I have looked all over online and can find nothing on my "Sleepy baby". I don't know if that was what she was called or just my name for her. Thanks!!
