The Benefits Of Eco-Friendly Toys For Your Children
by Jennifer Lister

Eco-friendly toys are becoming an increasingly popular choice — in fact, generation Alpha (children born between 2010 and 2025) are the most eco-conscious generation yet, with 63% of this demographic wanting work in some way that lets them help save the planet when they grow up. Providing your child with eco-friendly toys is significantly better for their health and the environment. It can also teach your children the green principles essential for living in closer harmony with the Earth.

Better for baby

While the health effects of chemicals used to create plastic toys aren’t fully known, phthalates, commonly found in children’s toys, have been linked to a number of health risks, including, diabetes, cancer and birth defects - and little ones, who often put toys in their mouths, are particularly vulnerable. PVC toys often include phthalates as a softening agent. Paint, dye, and BPA are other potentially harmful substances to avoid. Eco-friendly toys are a safer choice for babies and children, but it’s important to be aware that sustainable toys aren’t always also non-toxic. Make sure your chosen toy is made with both environmentally-friendly processes and organic, non-toxic materials and finishes.

Good education

With eco-friendly toys, your child has the unique opportunity to have plenty of fun while learning how to appreciate and protect the environment and live a sustainable lifestyle. For example, some toys can give your child the chance to work on different creative and sustainable construction projects like building a wind-powered LED or a space explorer. Alternatively, a children’s garden kit can teach your child how to work with nature to produce delicious fresh produce. From germinating seedlings through to harvesting, teaching your child how to grow their own food is an essential skill they can take with them for life.

Better for the planet

Only 9% of all plastic is recycled, while 79% of it ends up in landfills or in the natural environment as litter. Green toys made of biodegradable materials like wood, cotton, straw or bamboo are kinder to the environment; they break down either partially or fully once recycled or thrown out. Biodegradable materials also have other useful purposes like making garden compost or animal feed. Eco-friendly toys additionally eliminate excess and unsustainable packaging materials like plastic and styrofoam, which are neither biodegradable nor recyclable.

Sustainable toys are a great choice for children. Not only are eco-friendly toys a safer and more sustainable option; they’ll also teach your children the importance of protecting the environment as a whole.
